EnerMaps, an open tool to accelerate the energy transition

Go to the Visualisation tool
Go to the Gateway

ENERMAPS CHALLENGE

EnerMap-diagram-final

Objective 1

Centralise energy datasets on one user-friendly gateway – the EnerMaps open data management tool – to connect the energy research community with energy professionals.

Objective 2

Improve the accessibility of scientific datasets such as the thermal and electric energy datasets, in order to maximise incentives for researchers to share their data with decision makers.

Objective 3

Ensure the quality of the datasets centralised on the gateway.

Objective 4

Increase the energy data knowledge of target groups – energy planners, policy makers, public administrations, data providers, and the energy research community – through training activities (using action-learning techniques) to accelerate and facilitate the energy transition.

EnerMap-diagram-final

EU project, from April 2020 to April 2022

EnerMaps project will reach these objectives through five steps:

a) Identifying crucial energy datasets through collaborative research (supported by the Consortium’s internal and external experts and target group representatives),

b) Comparing and quality checking the datasets,

c) Enriching, visualising, and bringing new analytical tools to these datasets,

d) Compiling different datasets in one place – the EnerMaps Data Management Tool,

e) Leading a capacity building program on data management directly targeting lead users and indirectly targeting end users.

WORK PACKAGE 0

Project management

The goal of this WP is to ensure overall management of the project, in terms of documentation, reporting and financial aspects. In particular, it covers the organization of regular or on-demand (physical or cyber-) meetings of consortium partners, progress monitoring, and regular contact with the European Commission for reporting, deliverables submission and payments.

WORK PACKAGE 1

Datasets collection,
validation, and exploitation

The aim of this WP is to assemble, analyse, compare, and select the datasets required for the EnerMaps Data Management Tool. The WP will also define by which means the EnerMaps Tool will transform data/information into knowledge, exploitable by target groups.
The results produced constitute in particular input for WP2, 3, as well as 5, and 6.

2

WORK PACKAGE 2

Database management
and data integration

This WP aims to gather the selected datasets in WP1 within a database (EnerMaps Data Management Tool database) following a unique schema structure (XSD). The data will be processed, and in the case of not georeferenced data, spatially enriched to be visualised in a web-based GIS. An API REST will be developed to ensure the connection to the database by any web-based GIS. The resulting database and its connection possibilities will serve as a basis for WP3 supporting the analysis phase.

WORK PACKAGE 3

Datasets enrichment, knowledge creation, and visualization

The objective of this WP is to enrich and improve the external scientific datasets, which have been selected in WP1 and introduced into the EnerMaps database in WP2 as well as improve their visibility and to contextualize the different datasets collected so that the user is able to reuse and understand each dataset. This will be accomplished partly by giving the users the possibility to process a part of the data in open source by calculation modules.

WORK PACKAGE 4

EnerMaps Data Management Tool integration within the European-wide initiatives related to scientific data management

The goal of this WP is to ensure that the EnerMaps Data Management Tool is fully integrated within the Europe-wide initiatives related to scientific data management
such as EOSC or OpenAIRE.

Work package leader:

5

WORK PACKAGE 5

Training and Capacity Building

The aim of this WP is to diffuse the knowledge on the existence of open source energy related data and its potential use for analyses. This WP will stimulate a guided and integrated discussion process on the potential use and exploitation of existing open datasets for creating innovation in different target groups and civil society, and to further inform the development of a common, and shared knowledge base through the use of action-learning techniques.

Work package leader:

6

WORK PACKAGE 6

Communication and Dissemination

This WP aims to effectively communicate the message and the use of EnerMaps to target groups, while also ensuring the useful dissemination of its results.
The objectives are:
1. Provide online and offline communication tools - 2. Disseminate the project results and findings to support partners - 3. Organise target group workshops and the final event - 4. Ensure proper communications between target groups

Training and Capacity Building
The aim of this WP is, on the one hand, to diffuse the knowledge on the existence of open source energy related data and its potential use for analyses by research, industry, energy utilities, energy managers, planners in the energy field, energy consultants, public administration officers operating in the energy sector and decision- makers, as well as social innovation experts and data providers. On the other hand, we will stimulate a guided and integrated discussion process on the potential use and exploitation of existing open datasets for creating innovation in different target groups and civil society, and to further inform the development of a common, and shared knowledge base through the use of action-learning techniques.
